“Counterfeit Poetry” (2013), for Soprano

“Counterfeit Poetry” Score Sample

This short song is based on a derived number sequence that at various points is mapped to different parameters of the composition (such as durations, measure lengths, scale degrees, etc.). The ‘lyrics’ are all numbers, which express the way the number sequence is being used. However, what the singer is describing constantly changes, to the point where the sung numbers begin to function more like poetry than as signs of the compositional process. The piece revels in the tension between the lyrical lines and soft harmonies, and the cold numbers articulating the piece’s literal construction.

Katie Bent, soprano; William Appleton, piano
